How to stop being overwhelmed with your marketing!
I apologise in advance for the semi-rant that is this post... I see so many people jumping on the bandwagon when new marketing platforms become popular. And it frustrates me to see people struggling and overwhelmed when they don't have to be.
Just because something is the 'latest and greatest' does not mean you need to use it.
Before taking on any new marketing strategy I want you to ask yourself these key questions:
1. Do I have time to add another marketing strategy to the mix?
If you're already struggling to do the things you said you would, is it really worth adding another thing to your to-do list? You're better off doing one or two things well than multiple strategies and platforms poorly.
2. Does this tactic suit your style?
Now I'm all for stepping out of your comfort zone, but if you are petrified of stepping in front of the camera - is another video platform right for you?
Perhaps you aren't comfortable with writing, and feel you get your message across better when you're talking to someone? In that case, don't pick a writing based platform!
Maybe you don't have a design bone in your body unless you want to pay a professional designer, why would you waste your time on a graphics based medium.
Your advantage is that there are SO many platforms available, just because something is 'trendy' doesn't mean you have to use it.
After all, if everyone in your industry is on one particular platform, doesn't it make more sense to own your own platform - that you can excel at!
3. Is your target market using this platform?
Now you do need to make sure you are on platforms where your ideal clients are hanging out. So if all your ideal clients are using a particular new platform - it is worth looking into.
However, keep in mind - there are early adopters of technology, and late adopters. Your target market might not be the first ones using a particular program. So keep this in mind as well.
Only if those three things align with a new platform should you endeavour to use them!
Marketing is one of the most difficult aspects for business people when they are starting out. Don't make this process harder for yourself than it needs to be.
Pick things you excel at, master them and grow your business that way - then challenge yourself when you've got the time, flexibility and client base to try them out!
