Let Me Take A Selfie
You may be wondering how Selfies and Marketing could possibly have anything in common, but I assure you there is and if you aren’t taking advantage of the phenomenon then you are missing out.
Unfortunately, this particular marketing strategy is dominated by the younger female population, and is going to be effective for Business to Consumer brands – however very clever B2B and Male Targeted companies could make this work as well.
Selfie: A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and Twitter. They are usually flattering and made to appear casual. Most selfies are taken with a camera held at arm’s length or pointed at a mirror, rather than by using a self-timer.
Now the important part, how can you get this to work for your business? People love taking photos of themselves (at least a large demographic does), and if they love a product or want to win something they are more than happy to take a photo and share it with their friends on a variety of social media platforms.
This is where you come in, have customers take photos of themselves with your product, perhaps they are holding your latest book, wearing your jewelry, showing off their latest outfit, or eating your food – They can be funny photos, or beautiful images.
If you’ve already got a large following there is a big chance someone has already taken a photo of themselves with your product. This is where social media tracking comes in handy, search hashtags (they will generally tag you, secretly hoping you’ll notice them!). Start noticing and more people will join in, everyone wants their five seconds of fame.
If you want to encourage this behaviour, you can host a competition, but if you do it right it can happen well and organically!
Two great companies on Instagram that have done this well for you to look at include: @frank_bod, @donutking_au. Other companies that do this well include coffee shops, restaurants, clothing stores, hair and make up, magazines and books, holiday destinations and so many more!
What companies are your favourite to follow, and have you entered any of these style competitons?
