Twitter is not a broadcast medium
I'm sure you've read that quote, “We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we speak.” Now the problem is that as marketers we get so caught up in trying to tell people how amazing our product and services are that sometimes we forget to listen. The honest truth - people don't care about you, or what you have to sell. They want to know what's in it for them.
Have a look at your Twitter feed, if it's anything like mine it is person after person tweeting promotional material. Read my latest article, buy my product - don't get me wrong, some of that is important to have - but the secret to Twitter is the conversation.
conversation noun 1. a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged.
Notice that word… Exchanged. Twitter gives you the ability to have one on one conversations with YOUR TARGET MARKET. Don't ever forget that - start using Twitter to engage in conversations and your Twitter account will actually start to work for you rather than just take up more of your precious time.
