Building your email list

Email marketing has gotten a bad rep lately, and understandably. We all have inboxes inundated with email newsletters from every company, brand, personality we have ever engaged with.

So how can it possibly be an effective marketing medium?

Let me explain, why.

Reason 1 - You own it

An email list is the ONLY marketing medium that you actually own.

Yep, the only one. If you do your marketing on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google Ads, they own you. If they ever decide to change their platform, go bankrupt, get hacked, decide they don't like you and your business and block you. They can.

Email marketing, and email addresses belong to you. Yes, you'll host them with someone else, but it is as easy as a simple export import to send them off to a different company.

If you build up 1 million likes on Facebook - you can't transfer them anywhere if Facebook hikes up the prices.

Reason 2 - Emails still get read

People still actually read their emails, but they only read the ones they want to.

With junk mail, spam filters and thousands of emails its easy to get missed. But I can pretty much guarantee that there is one or two people in your inbox that always catch your eye. There is that one company that you're always curious about. I love my fashion subscriptions and a couple of select 'experts' - the rest get ignored.

*Sidenote: If you're inbox is hectic - go check out Unroll.Me - they sort all your emails (well the ones you choose) into a daily round up. You can then quickly scan it to see if there is anything important.*

Reason 3 - Technology is really, freaking cool

With the increase in demand for email marketing - the tools out there have become infinitely cooler.

My personal favourite at the moment is ConvertKit - automations and sequences are easy to set up. You can resend emails to those who didn't open it the first time. Their customer support is amazing, and lead pages and opt-ins are pre-built and a cinch to set up!

There are so many programs out there, you're bound to find one that suits you and your business.

Conclusion

You need to be including email marketing into your marketing strategy. It is the best way to keep in touch with your clients, it helps you build a relationship with them, and you own the list.

People want to know who you are, what you have to offer, and they want to trust you. The easiest way to do this is through effective email marketing.
